Baldy Mountain

Baldy South face from Sheep Mountain

If you look the East while driving the Palisades corridor between Swan Valley and Alpine, you can not help but wonder if this stuff can be accessed for skiing. Apparently, you can and it is pretty easy if you are willing to take the 30 minute drive from Victor or the hour plus drive from Jackson.

Every year I try to go to obscure places in the Idaho/Wyoming area, and hiking around Swan Valley you will not see people. I think I saw more dogs than I did people, making this place in my eyes a little obscure.

At any rate, I had wanted to get down and ski Baldy Mountain, the most prominent and obvious peak in the Palisades.

I am going to keep this short and sweet. I went up the completely wrong way, it took 4.5 hours, did not summit anything only getting to 7800' and bushwacked in and out. In hindsight, I am not disappointed because, and if you can see in the photos, I was nowhere near what I had intended to ski and where I was going to ski was on the same aspect as the Baldy south face and had just avalanched. So what I wanted to ski on the South side probably was not safe anyway. I will certainly be going again but the North shot is the more desired and that makes sense after seeing it again from afar.

View of the peak and you can barely see it but the crown that runs almost the entire slope.
